CCC Softball Athletes of the Week #5

Player of the Week

Avery Alberghini, University of New England (Sr., C)

University of New England senior catcher Avery Alberghini (Moretown, Vt.) batted .571 (12-for-21) with three doubles, six RBI, eight runs scored, and a perfect 7-for-7 showing in stolen bases to lead the Nor'easters to a 5-2 weekly mark. In addition to extending her season-opening hitting streak to 21 games, Alberghini improved her stolen base tally to a perfect 24-for-24. In a doubleheader sweep of CCC rival Nichols by identical 4-0 scores, Alberghini notched three hits, three RBI and two steals. Later in the week, Alberghini collected three hits and an RBI in a split with Salve Regina. All told, in four CCC games, Alberghini batted .429 (6-for-14) with three doubles, four RBI, four runs scored and a pair of steals.

Pitcher of the Week

Andi Nelson, Salve Regina (So., P)

Salve Regina sophomore Andi Nelson (Candia, N.H) was a workhorse, posting a 2-1 weekly record with a miniscule 0.28 ERA over five appearances and two starts. Over 24-2/3 innings, Nelson permitted just one earned run on 14 hits. She struck out 24 and walked only five. In her first of two CCC starts, Nelson spun a two-hit complete-game shutout in a 4-0 victory over Gordon in which she struck out nine batters in seven innings. Nelson was a hard-luck loser in a 6-5 setback at UNE, allowing just one earned run in 9-1/3 innings of work. She whiffed 10 and walked two.

Rookie of the Week

Jamie Cookingham, Western New England (Fr., C/SS)

Western New England freshman Jamie Cookingham (Warner, N.H.) came up big in the Golden Bears' 5-1 week, as she batted .444 (8-for-18) with three doubles, one home run, and eight RBI. Cookingham hit safely in five straight games with multiple hits in three contests. The newcomer drove in three runs in a doubleheader split with Wentworth, registered four hits and three RBI in a twinbill sweep at Keene State, and closed out the week with three hits, a home run and two RBI in a sweep of Roger Williams.
