SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Nichols College junior Jake Wood (Whitinsville, Mass.) has been named both the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Special Teams Player of the Week and the D3football.com Team of the Week.
Wood set a program-record with two kickoff returns for touchdowns in Friday night's season-opener at Westfield State. His first return – an 84-yard burst late in the second quarter – got the Bison on the board and brought them to within seven points (12-7) entering the half.
At the start of the fourth quarter, Wood broke off a 90-yard return for a score that got Nichols to within two scores at 25-14. The scamper tied for the fourth-longest in program history. The two returns gave him 174 total return yards.
"It's an honor for both Jake and our program to be recognized by the conference with this weekly award," said Nichols head coach Dale Olmsted. "Jake has worked extremely hard since he joined our program this spring. He's a leader both on and off the field. In my 25 yards of coaching, I don't think I've ever seen a performance like Jake's on Friday night."
The Bison (0-1) open the home portion of their schedule this Friday against Anna Maria at 7:00 p.m.
